MOVIE POSTER COLLECTORS AUTHENTICATION

STAR WARS STYLE A US ONE SHEET MOVIE POSTER

The Star Wars Style A one sheet is probably the best known movie poster ever produced and is a “must” for most collectors. Fortunately, because the movie was so popular, National Screen Service mass-printed the Style A poster on several occasions. (In 2012 good condition Style A theater original posters auction for $100-$200).  There are four known domestic printings that are relatively common and two very rare versions without the PG ratings box in the lower left.  Each printing has slightly different text and identifications on the bottom right.  The first domestic printing generally sells for slightly more than the other printings, however BE WARNED that the first domestic printing was later bootlegged (as explained below):

FIRST DOMESTIC PRINTING: (1) ONE SHEET - STYLE “A” and (2) NSS number 77/21-0:

*****WARNING: THIS PRINTING WAS BOOTLEGGED (SEE BELOW)***********

SECOND DOMESTIC PRINTING: (1) ONE SHEET - STYLE “A"  and (2) NSS number 77/21:

THIRD DOMESTIC PRINTING: (1) ONE SHEET - STYLE “A” and (2) NSS number 77/21 and (3) "STAR WARS" below NSS number:

FOURTH DOMESTIC PRINTING: (1) omits ONE SHEET - STYLE “A”; (2) NSS number 77/21; (3) "STAR WARS" below NSS number:

DISTINGUISHING THE BOOTLEG

OF THE STYLE A FIRST DOMESTIC PRINTING

Unfortunately, at some point (probably early 1980s) someone used the original printing plates to print several thousand “bootleg” Star Wars Style A posters of the FIRST DOMESTIC PRINTING ONLY (“77-21-0” NSS number).  THERE ARE NO KNOWN BOOTLEGS OF THE OTHER STYLES. The bootlegs are EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD since they were made from the original printing plate.  In fact they are arguably more attractive because the “warm brown” coloring is “prettier” than the originals, they are rolled, and they are in pristine condition.  Fortunately, they can easily be distinguished from originals because (1) they are rolled while originals are almost always folded, (2) the ground color of the bootleg is warm brown while the original is green-brown and (3) the bootleg has two “hairs”/printing defects on Luke’s belt and Leia’s thigh.

INTERNATIONAL (?) PRINTING (EXTREMELY RARE):  (1) No ratings box in lower left, (2) no “LITHO IN USA” next to union logo, and (3) third line of NSS paragraph is missing. (Picture courtesy of D. Rickard.)

NO RATINGS BOX PRINTING (EXTREMELY RARE):  (1) No ratings box in lower left, (2) has “LITHO IN USA” next to union logo, and (3) has three line NSS paragraph.  (Emovie sold this copy for $1,500 in November 2012).
